How to Write a Google Business Profile Description That Converts

How to Write a Google Business Profile Description That Converts

Most business owners fill out their Google Business Profile once, write a rushed description, and never look at it again. That's a missed opportunity. Your business description is one of the few places on your profile where you control the exact words customers read before they decide to call.

Why the Description Actually Matters

Your GBP description shows up when customers tap "More info" on your listing, and it can also influence how AI tools and Google describe your business in search results and AI-generated answers. A vague, generic description gives Google (and AI) nothing useful to work with. A specific, well-written one gives you a real chance to stand out.

What to Avoid

  • Generic filler. "We are a family-owned business that cares about quality and customer service" could describe almost any business in the country.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating "Rotorua plumber Rotorua plumbing Rotorua pipes" reads badly and can actually hurt trust.
  • Leaving it blank. An empty description is a wasted opportunity and looks unfinished to potential customers.

What a Good Description Includes

  1. What you do, specifically. Not "home services" but "residential and commercial electrical repairs, rewiring, and switchboard upgrades."
  2. Who you serve. Name your actual service area, suburbs, and towns, not just "the wider region."
  3. What makes you different. Same-day callouts, 24/7 availability, a guarantee, a specific certification, anything concrete.
  4. A clear next step. Mention how customers can get in touch, call, book online, or request a quote.

Example rewrite: Instead of "Quality plumbing services you can trust," try "Licensed plumbers serving Rotorua, Ngongotaha, and Reporoa. Same-day callouts for blocked drains, leaks, and hot water repairs. Free quotes, no call-out fee on weekdays."

Keep It Consistent Everywhere

Whatever language you settle on for your GBP description, try to keep your business name, services, and service area consistent across your website, social media, and any directory listings. Consistency builds trust with both customers and the AI tools increasingly used to find local businesses.
