5 Signs Your Website Is Quietly Costing You Customers

Website on laptop screen

Most business owners assume their website is doing its job. They set it up a few years ago, it looked good at the time, and as long as it loads and has their phone number on it, they figure it's fine.

It's often not fine. Your website may be working against you every single day, turning visitors away before they ever make contact. The problem is you'll never know, because those lost customers don't send a complaint. They just leave and call someone else.

Here are the five most common signs your website is costing you business.

Sign 01

It Loads Slowly on Mobile

More than 70% of local searches happen on a mobile phone. If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, more than half of those visitors will leave before they see anything. Google also uses page speed as a ranking factor, meaning a slow site hurts both your traffic and your conversion rate simultaneously.

The most common causes of slow mobile loading are oversized images, too many plugins, and cheap hosting. All are fixable.

The Fix

Test your site at pagespeed.web.dev. Compress all images to under 200KB each, use WebP format, and if you're on a shared hosting plan, consider moving to a faster host like Netlify or Cloudflare Pages.

Sign 02

Your Phone Number Isn't Tap-to-Call

A visitor on their phone sees your number, maybe in the header, maybe in the footer, and has to manually type it in to call you. Many won't bother. They'll find a competitor whose number they can tap directly.

This is one of the simplest fixes in web design and one of the most commonly neglected. Every local business website should have a tappable phone number in the most prominent position on the page.

The Fix

Wrap your phone number in <a href="tel:+6412345678"> so it dials automatically when tapped on mobile. Put this in the header, visible immediately when the page loads.

Sign 03

There's No Clear "What to Do Next"

A visitor lands on your website. They scroll through it. It looks reasonable. Then they leave, because they weren't sure what to do. Should they call? Fill in a form? Click a button? Come into your premises?

Every page of your website needs a single, obvious primary action. Not three options in small text at the bottom of the page. One prominent, clear call-to-action that tells the visitor exactly what to do and makes it easy to do it.

The Fix

Decide on your primary conversion action (phone call, form submission, booking). Put a prominently styled button for that action above the fold on every page. Remove competing links and distractions around it.

Sign 04

It Looks Outdated, Or Like a DIY Job

Consumers judge businesses by their website within 0.05 seconds, that's 50 milliseconds. An outdated design, blurry photos, mismatched fonts, or a template that clearly hasn't been touched since 2016 signals low professionalism before a single word is read.

This is especially damaging for trades businesses where the decision to let someone into your home or business is already a trust leap. Your website is often the first impression you make. A dated or amateurish site actively undermines trust.

The Fix

You don't need a massive, expensive website rebuild. A clean, modern one-page site with professional photos, clear services, and a strong CTA will outperform a complex, outdated multi-page site every time.

Sign 05

You Can't Find It When You Google Your Own Service

Try this: Google "[your service] [your town]", for example, "plumber Rotorua" or "dental clinic Taupo." If your business doesn't appear in the first page of results or in the map pack, you're invisible to customers who are actively searching right now.

This isn't just a website problem, it's a local SEO problem. But your website is part of the solution. A website that's not optimised for local search sends no signal to Google about what you do or where you operate.

The Fix

Make sure your website clearly states your service and location (in text, not just images). Add a title tag like "Rotorua Plumber | Available 24/7 | Smith Plumbing." Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Start building local citations.

The honest truth: Most of these issues are not expensive to fix. They're just not being fixed because no one has pointed them out. A quick audit will show you exactly where your site is losing people, and usually, the biggest wins require the smallest changes.
